Interlibrary Borrowing

California State employees who have a California State Library card can request items not available in the California State Library's collections from other libraries through the Interlibrary Loan service. Members and staff of the State Legislature and Governor's Office may contact the California Research Bureau for interlibrary borrowing assistance.

Books, journal articles, reports, etc. required for your California State government job.

Other libraries will generally loan material that they circulate to their own borrowers. Often excluded are: textbooks, reference books, course reserve books, rare books, recently-published books, microfilm, dissertations, technical reports, and audiovisual material.

Libraries usually supply a scanned PDF copy of a journal article rather than loan a journal.

Obtaining books and articles from other libraries can take from two weeks to a month depending on which library is able to fill the interlibrary loan request. Please allow ample time.

Submit requests online at Ask A Librarian or email cslinfo@library.ca.gov.

Members and staff of the State Legislature and Governor's Office may contact the California Research Bureau for Interlibrary Borrowing assistance.

Please supply your deadline for receiving the material; author, title, date of publication, edition, series and or report number for books and reports; and journal title, volume number, issue number, issue date, author, article title and page numbers for journal articles.

You will be notified by telephone or email when we have received the requested book, journal article, etc.

Please return items borrowed through interlibrary loan in-person to the California State Library Information Services desk by the due date to allow time for shipping the item back to the lending library.
