Online Resources

The following online resources augment the collections of the California State Library. These resources are available to California state government officials and employees and to all visitors in our reading rooms. Please check our Internet Links for additional online resources.

The electronic databases offered to California State government employees through the California State Library are listed on our Online Resources webpage.

The State Library uses internet protocol (IP) addresses to connect state employees to the online resources via their work computers. On our Online Resources web page, click a database name and when connected to that resource you can begin searching. If you are prompted for a username and password, your state agency may not have provided your computer's IP address to the State Library. Please ask the IT staff at your agency to contact our Information Services staff in order to check the IP address for database access.

Using their California State Library borrower card number, state employees can access the Library's online resources from their home computers. You can apply for a library card online.

On our Online Resources web page, click a database name. You will be prompted for your California State Library card number and password. Enter the card number and password and click submit. You should then be connected to the database and can begin searching.

    The National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS) is a federally funded resource offering justice and substance abuse information to support research, policy, and program development worldwide. NCJRS Abstracts Database contains summaries of more than 160,000 criminal justice publications.

    Contains American companies that have a substantial investment in overseas operations. In the American Firms directory, the parent company information, US branch locations and foreign subsidiaries are retrieved. Search results can be downloaded into Excel for further sorting.     Contains approximately 4,000 databases for genealogical and historical research.   • Federal Funds Information for States (FFIS) (Details)

    A subscription service of the National Governor's Association and the National Conference of State Legislators. Tracks the fiscal impact of federal budget and policy decisions on state budgets and programs. A database of more than 200 federal grant-in-aid programs provides detailed information on federal funds available to California.

  • Homeland Security Digital Library (HSDL) (Details)

    The nation's premier collection of documents related to homeland security policy, strategy, and organizational management. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's National Preparedness Directorate, FEMA and the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Center for Homeland Defense and Security. The California State Library is able to offer access to the full collection of HSDL materials as a part of our role as a member of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP).
