California Books

Are you looking for books on California history? We can help! In addition to our manuscripts, ephemera, periodicals, photos and other resources, we have over 80,000 California history-related books, making our collection one of the largest of its kind in the world. In our stacks, we have early cookbooks, diaries, county histories, and much more. To fully explore our books, please consult the library catalog or contact us.

Not finding what you need? Don't give up! We have many other book resources including indexes and online books. What's more, if we don't have it another library section might. Just drop us a line and we will try to connect you with the appropriate resource.

We are thrilled that you want to borrow our items! We loan our circulating books directly to current state employees and indirectly to the general public via interlibrary loan. If you have any questions about borrowing our materials, please feel free to contact us.

Even if you cannot visit us, you can still use many of our books remotely by placing an inter-library loan at your local library, viewing digitized copies or placing copy orders for book selections less than 20 pages in length. If you have any questions about these access options, please contact us.

To accommodate researchers who choose to visit us, we provide access to digital book-scanners that allow you to email or save scans of many of our books to a flash-drive free of charge. If you need paper copies, we have a coin-operated copy-machine. Each print-out costs 15 cents. We also permit no-flash photography and can arrange for photographic reproductions from our rare books.
